Top Tips for Healthy Eyes

Taking care of our eyes is just as important as the rest of our bodies. Follow these top tips from Vision Matters on how to ensure your eyes are kept healthy, sparkling and bright

Regular check ups

Get your eyes tested every two years even if you think your vision is fine. Some eye conditions, for example open angle glaucoma, may not show symptoms and so regular check-ups are vital.

Quit the habit
If you smoke, you have another good reason to kick the habit. Smoking is directly linked to blindness. Current smokers are four times more likely to develop macular degeneration compared to past smokers or non-smokers.

It’s all relative
Talk to your relatives about your family eye health history as some eye conditions have genetic links such as glaucoma or squint. It is important that you share this information with your optometrist or eye health professional.

Contact care
If you wear contact lenses make sure you look after them properly. Thoroughly wash your hands before touching your contact lenses or your eyes and only ever clean your contacts using the contact lens solution recommended by your optometrist. Never shower, sleep or swim with your contacts lenses in because this can put you at risk of developing a serious eye infection which could lead to blindness. Also, don't wear them for longer periods than those recommended by your optometrist.

Be cool in the sun
Protect your eyes when it is sunny or when you’re in high glare areas such as near snow or water. Cumulative UV exposure can increase your risk of developing cataracts or macular degeneration. When choosing sunglasses make sure that they are safe as well as stylish!  Look out for the CE or BS EN 1836:2005 marks – this ensures that they provide a safe level of protection from the sun’s damaging UVA and UVB rays.

Protect your eyes
If you work with hazardous or airborne materials at work or home wear safety glasses or protective goggles to protect your eyes from injury.

Keep fit and healthy
Regular exercise is essential to stay fit and healthy but it is also important that when playing sports such as squash that you wear protective eye wear such as helmets or sports goggles to protect your eyes from a flying ball.

Eat well
Protecting your eyes starts with the food you eat. Studies have shown that nutrients in omega-3 fatty acids, zinc and vitamins C and E may help to prevent age-related vision problems such as macular degeneration and cataracts. Recommended foods include green leafy vegetables and oily fish such as salmon and citrus fruits.

WATER

WATER

1. Intake of water is very essential to maintain good health and to assist the smooth functioning of the body.  2. One should have at least 8-10 glasses of water per day or a minimum of 2 to 2.5 litres per day.
3. Water is a good remedy for constipation and other intestinal or stomach disorders.
4. Warm water gives relief to cough, cold and sore throat.
5. Splashing fresh water in the eyes first thing in the morning will bring relief to tired eyes, will improve eyesight and vision and will keep the eyes healthy.
6. Anuria or anuresis can be cured by sitting in a hot water tub filled up to your waist.
7. Drinking the required quantity of water helps in removing waste products from the body.
8. It is known that inhaling or sucking in a few drops of water daily through the nose cures cold permanently.
9. Water is considered a good skin tonic. Proper intake of water keeps the skin clear, glowing and moist. It also delays the ageing process.
10. One should practice water therapy daily, that is, to have water early in the morning as soon as one gets up, one should have at least five glasses of water on an empty stomach and then after about 45 minutes one can have tea/coffee or breakfast.
11. Water stored in a clay pot or a pitcher is considered healthy than refrigerated water. Refrigerated water does not quench thirst.
12. Do not drink water during meals as it hampers the digestion by reducing the concentration of gastric juices that aids the process of digestion.
13. Do not drink water immediately after meals. Water must be taken at least 2 hours after any meal.

Weight Loss Tips

Weight Loss Tips
General Tips
1. Eat at least three times per day.
2. Pay attention to your body. When you feel like you have had enough to eat, stop. Quit before you feel full, stuffed, or sick from eating. You can have more if you are really hungry.
3. If you still feel hungry or unsatisfied after a meal or snack, wait at least 10 minutes before you have more food. Often, the craving will go away.
4. Drink plenty of calorie-free drinks (water, tea, coffee, diet soda). You may be thirsty, not hungry.
5. Pick lean meats, low-fat or nonfat cheese, and skim (nonfat) or 1% fat milk instead of higher-fat/higher-calorie choices.
6. Get plenty of fiber. Vegetables, fruits, and whole grains are good sources. Have a high fiber cereal every day.
7. Cut back on sugar. For example, drink less fruit juice and regular soda.
8. Limit the amount of alcohol (beer, wine, and liquor) that you drink.
9. Keep all food in the kitchen. Eat only in a chosen place, such as at the table. Don’t eat in the car or the bedroom or in front of the TV.

Food Preparation
10. Plan meals ahead of time.
11. Try cooking methods that cut calories:
12  Cook without adding fat (bake, broil, roast, boil).
13. Use nonstick cooking sprays instead of butter or oil. You can also use wine, broth, or fruit juice instead of oil when cooking.
14. Use low-calorie foods instead of high-calorie ones when possible.
15. Cook only what you need for one meal (don’t make leftovers).
16. If you do make extra portions, put them away as soon as they are ready so you can save them for other meals. Store the leftovers in containers that you can’t see through.
17. Cook when you are not hungry. For example, cook and refrigerate tomorrow’s dinner after you have finished eating tonight.
18. Make fruits, vegetables, and other low-calorie foods part of each meal.
19. Drink water while you cook.

Mealtimes
20. Drink a glass of water before you eat. Drink more during meals.
21. Use smaller plates, bowls, glasses, and serving spoons.
22. Divide your plate into four equal parts. Use one part for meat, one for starch (such as pasta, rice, potatoes, or bread), and two for nonstarchy vegetables.
23. Do not put serving dishes on the table. This will make it harder to take a second portion.
24. Put salad dressing on the side instead of mixing it with, or pouring onto your salad. Then dip your fork into the dressing before you spear a bite of salad.
25. Change your usual place at the table.
26. Make mealtime special by using pretty dishes, napkins, and glasses.
27. Eat slowly. Take a few one-minute breaks from eating during meals. Put your fork down between bites. Cut your food one bite at a time.
28. Enjoy fruit for dessert instead of cake, pie, or other sweets.
29. Leave a little food on your plate. (You control the food; it doesn’t control you.)
30. Remove your plate as soon as you’ve finished eating.
31. If there’s no good use for leftovers, throw them out!

Snacking
Snacking can be part of your plan for healthy weight loss. You can eat six times per day as long as you plan what to eat and don’t eat too many calories.
32. Plan ahead. Be sure to have healthy snacks on hand. If the right food is not there, you may be more likely to eat whatever is available, such as candy, cookies, chips, leftovers, or other “quick” choices.
33. Keep low-calorie snacks in a special part of the refrigerator. Good choices include the following:
34. Reduced-fat string cheese, low-calorie yogurt, and nonfat milk.
35. Washed, bite-size pieces of raw vegetables, such as carrots, celery, pepper strips, cucumbers, broccoli, and cauliflower. Serve with low-calorie dips.
36. Fresh fruit.

Eating and Emotions
Do you use eating to deal with feelings other than hunger, such as boredom, being tired, or stress. If you eat for these reasons, here are some other things you can try:
37. Call a friend for support.
38. Use inspirational quotes to help you avoid the temptation to eat.
39. Take a warm bath or shower.
40. Listen to music or a relaxation CD.
41. Take a walk.
42. Try activities that keep you from eating. For example, it’s hard to eat while you’re exercising. If you are gardening, you probably won’t eat while your hands are covered in soil.

How to Lose Weight All Day Long

Timing your workouts and meals may be the secret to your weight loss success

Timing your workouts and meals may be the secret to your weight loss success

Understanding and working with your body's natural hunger and sleep rhythms will vanquish cravings, increase energy, and help you lose more weight.

It's not just what you eat or how much you exercise that matters; it's the timing of each component that is the true secret to weight loss success. Research shows that our bodies' inner eat-and-sleep clocks have been thrown completely out of whack, thanks to all-day food cues and too much nighttime artificial light. The result: You're caught in a "fat cycle": a constant flow of hunger hormones that makes you prone to cravings. By tuning in to your body's natural eat/sleep schedule, you can finally say good-bye to your belly.

The Perfect Day of Eating

Drop Around The Clock! Follow this hour-by-hour slim-down schedule to control hunger hormones, banish cravings, and get trim and toned--fast!

6 TO 8 AM: GET MOVING.
Within a half hour of rising and before you eat breakfast, do 20 minutes of cardio. Research has found that exercising before breakfast may help you burn fat more efficiently. If you can get outside, even better. Early morning sunlight helps your body naturally reset itself to a healthier sleep/wake cycle (regular indoor lights don't have the same effect).

How to Burn More Calories with Every Workout

6:55 TO 8:55 AM: DRINK UP.

Before every meal, drink two 8-ounce glasses of water. Research shows that people who drank this amount lost 5 pounds more than nonguzzlers.

7 TO 9 AM: EAT BREAKFAST.

The alarm clock also wakes up ghrelin, the "feed me" hormone made in your stomach. Ignore ghrelin and your body will produce even more, eventually making you ravenous. To suppress ghrelin's effect, eat a mix of complex carbs and protein, such as eggs and whole grain toast, within an hour of waking.

10 TO 11 AM: MUNCH MIDMORNING.

Ghrelin begins to rise again a couple of hours before lunch. It turns off when you chow down, particularly on carbs and protein, so have a small combo snack, like blueberries and Greek-style yogurt.

12 TO 1 PM: HAVE YOUR MIDDAY MEAL.

Galanin, another hunger hormone that makes you crave fat, rises around lunchtime. However, dietary fat causes you to produce more galanin, which then tells you to eat more fat. Instead, fill up with complex carbs and protein, such as chicken-vegetable soup or black bean chili.

The Best Sandwiches for Weight Loss

2 TO 3 PM: TAKE A NAP.

Instead of hitting the vending machines, find a quiet place to grab a few Zzzs. (Hint: Your parked car is the perfect impromptu sleep pod!) Just set an alarm--15 to 20 minutes will energize your body without affecting your ability to sleep at night.

3:30 PM: GET BUZZED.
Need a boost? This is your last chance to have a cup of joe. Drinking coffee after 4 PM disturbs circadian rhythms and can keep you from falling asleep at night.

4 TO 8 PM: TRIM AND TONE.
Now's the time to do your strength training, plus any additional cardio. This is when your body temperature is highest, so you're primed for peak performance. In one study, subjects who worked out in the late afternoon or early evening built 22% more muscle than morning exercisers.

7 Strength Moves You've Got to Learn

5 TO 7 PM: TIME TO DINE.

To ensure you don't wake up hungry in the middle of the night, add a serving of healthy fats, such as flaxseed or fish oil, to your meal. If you're a wine drinker, pour a glass now. Drinking later can delay dream (REM) sleep, waking you frequently during the night.

9 TO PM: HAVE A PRESLEEP SNACK.
Enjoy a carb-based bedtime snack, such as a serving of low-fat frozen yogurt. Nighttime carbs create tryptophan, which helps your brain produce serotonin. This feel-good chemical triggers your body to make melatonin, the sleep hormone.

9 TO 10:30 PM: POWER DOWN.
Step away from digital devices, including the TV. They emit a blue spectrum of light that's even more disruptive to sleep than regular bulbs. Do something calming--read, take a bath--in dim light so you're ready to nod off when you hit the sheets.

10 Reasons You Can't Fall Asleep

9:30 TO 11 PM: GO TO SLEEP.

Crawl under the covers at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning, even on weekends. Having a regular sleep-and-wake schedule helps you fall asleep faster over time.

So the question arises, would all these tips work? Today, we ask Dr. Shilpa Mittal - Nutritionist, Diet Consultant and Founder of Nutrilife Health Management and Ms. Sunita Pathania - Sr. Registered Dietician and Diabetes Educator, Healthy Living Diet Clinic, Mumbai, to share some healthy and best tips for the moms-to-be.

Pregnancy Health Tips: Check your thyroid
According to Dr. Shilpa, now-a-days there are several cases of underactive metabolism commonly known as hypothyroidism reported all over the country. This problem often goes undiagnosed.

This problem can cause miscarriage or learning disabilities in the baby. Be safe, check for thyroid as soon as you know that you are pregnant, because treating a low thyroid is safe and easy during pregnancy.

Pregnancy Health Tips: Hydration is important
In order to have a healthy pregnancy period, the intake of sufficient amount of water is essential - says Ms. Sunita. Drinking fluids can help in preventing miscarriage, digestive problems and urine infections. Hence, make it a point to drink more than 12 glasses of water every day.

Pregnancy Health Tips: Stay away from cat poo
Avoid cleaning cat feces, because it contains a parasite that causes infection toxoplasmosis. Toxoplasmosis can cause major health problems like brain damage and blindness in your baby.

Pregnancy Health Tips: Eat bananas to treat cramps
Leg cramps are common during pregnancy and can be excruciatingly painful. In order to heal cramps, make sure to eat a banana at bedtime. Banana being rich in potassium helps to relieve cramps and pain.

Pregnancy Health Tips: Pre exercise tips
Always consult your doctor, before starting an exercise regime. Also make sure that the instructor knows that you are pregnant, in order to avoid injuries. Wear well supported shoes and bra.

For the safety of your child don't try heavy weight exercises and avoid changing position quickly, as this will cause strain and make you dizzy. Lastly, avoid holding your breath for too long, as this will affect the flow of oxygen to your baby.

Pregnancy Health Tips: Exercise
Exercising during pregnancy is the most important thing to do to have a safe delivery. Thus, exercise everyday for your health and to reduce stress.

Pregnancy Health Tips: Recommended exercise
Dr. Shilpa recommends exercises like walking, but not more than an hour and outdoor group exercise in fresh air with other moms and to-be-moms. Practice yoga and Pilates but under a trained instructor, for quick stress relief and back pain relief.

Pregnant women can also try water exercises like swimming or walking in the water to support the growing weight of your body.

Pregnancy Health Tips: Consume a diet rich in Folic Acid
Folic acid is essential for the proper growth of the baby and to avoid birth problems. Make sure that you get at least 400 to 800 micrograms of folic acid per day.

Include deep green leafy vegetables, dried beans, and citrus fruit to get your daily quota of folic acid. But make sure you don't consume beyond limit, as too much folic acid has its own risk too.

Pregnancy Health Tips: Reduce alcohol, caffeine and quit smoking
Trim down the consumption of alcohol, caffeine and smoke, because consumption of all these three things can cause serious birth problems to you and your baby. Stay away from secondhand smoke as well, because nicotine present in cigarettes can cause weight related problems in the baby - says Ms. Sunita.

Pregnancy Health Tips: Wear a safety belt
Always wear a safety belt, to avoid unwanted injuries. Dr. Shilpa recommends, the shoulder portion of the restraint should be positioned over the collar bone and the lap portion should be placed under the abdomen below the hips and across the upper thighs. Also make sure you're not sitting too close to the air bag.

Pregnancy Health Tips: Get adequate sleep
Make sure you get at least 8 hours of sleep, while you are pregnant to make yourself relaxed and energized throughout the day. A good night's sleep is essential for the health of both mom and the baby.

Most pregnant women suffer from insomnia, hence try buying pregnancy pillows or some other mattress to get sound sleep.

Pregnancy Health Tips: Reduce the risk of salmonella
Always separate cooked and raw foods, make sure you don't mix knives, plates, spoons, or cutting boards when handling raw meat or eggs to reduce the risk of salmonella and other harmful bacteria.

Pregnancy Health Tips: Take oral care
During pregnancy, be extra vigilant with your oral health, as your gums might get inflamed, causing them to bleed. Brush regularly, twice a day, with the use of a good fluoride toothpaste and visit your dentist regularly.

Pregnancy Health Tips: Care for your feet
Wear proper fitted, comfortable shoes in order to prevent fatigue and swelling of the feet and legs.

Pregnancy Health Tips: Limit animal fat
Reduce meat and animal fat in your diet. Animal products, from unreliable sources, may contain various types of chemicals like DDT and other pesticides, which can linger in your body and cause serious damage - says Dr. Shilpa.

This holds particularly true in countries where the meat sold is not put through rigorous quality checks. Therefore, if you aren't sure about where it's coming from, abstinence may work in your favour.

Pregnancy Health Tips: Overheating is bad
Avoid saunas or hot spas during your pregnancy period. Being in an extremely hot temperature can cause harm to you and your baby.

Pregnancy Health Tips: Try acupuncture
This fine needle therapy has its own healing technique to heal constipation, insomnia and anxiety. This therapy is completely safe, reliable and very effective in treating pain.

Pregnancy Health Tips: Stay away from cosmetics
Many personal care products contain various chemicals and other carcinogens that can affect your baby's development. The best thing you can do to protect your baby is to opt for safe products or simply avoid cosmetics for 9 months.

Pregnancy Health Tips: Gain weight steadily
Dr. Shilpa says, that you should gain only about a pound in your first trimester. And add only 135 calories to your diet per day. In order to fulfill the 135 calories mark, add a glass of milk, nutritious foods and one egg daily in your diet.

Pregnancy Health Tips: Avoid carrying heavy loads
Follow the guidelines laid down by your healthcare provider as to how much weight your body can lift from one trimester to the next. You're already undergoing a lot of back strain because you will be carrying your growing baby. Due to which there will be sudden change in how you hold yourself because your centre of gravity moves forward.

Therefore objects like your older child, a bucket of water, a bagful of groceries, a gas cylinder, etc will increase the strain on your back even more.

Six Tips to Jump Start Weight Loss in the New Year

Losing weight is at the top of many a New Year’s resolution list. In addition to maintaining a healthy diet and getting enough exercise, what else can one do to make sure those good intentions have a lasting impact throughout the year?

Below are research-based tips from investigators at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center that may help jump start one’s weight loss progress in the coming year.

1. Keep moving each day. We all know that exercise is crucial to losing weight, but sometimes it’s easier said than done. The task need not be daunting; all it takes to see a weight-loss benefit is 30 to 60 minutes of aerobic activity daily. “You don’t need to be athletic. Just brisk walking or dancing to your favorite music or using an aerobic exercise machine like a stationary bike or treadmill is all you need to do – just try to do it each day,” said Anne McTiernan, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Hutchinson Center’s Prevention Center. The exercise doesn’t have to be all at once. “You can break it into 10- or 15-minute sessions throughout the day to get the weight-loss benefit,” she said.

2. Keep a food journal. “By spending a little extra time to write down everything you eat and drink, you’ll be able to see where extra calories sneak in,” said postdoctoral research fellow Caitlin Mason, Ph.D., an exercise and health researcher in the Public Health Sciences Division of the Hutchinson Center. “There are lots of good online tools that can help estimate the calorie content of common foods and track your weight loss progress over time,” she said.

3. Set realistic goals. “The biggest mistake people make when trying to lose weight is trying to lose too many pounds too fast or setting unrealistic goals,” Mason said. “For long-term success, aim for a slow, steady weight loss of about 1 to 2 pounds a week. No one wants to lose weight only to gain it all back – and often more – a few months later.

4. Set specific goals. Instead of resolving to “lose weight,” which is too general, set several smaller but more specific goals, such as eating five servings of vegetables per day, taking a 15-minute walk at lunch each day or drinking six glasses of water per day. “Adding healthy behaviors to your routine is often easier than telling yourself ‘don’t do this’ or ‘don’t eat that,’” Mason said.

5. Don’t let one slip-up derail your efforts. “Don’t throw your entire routine out the window after one bad day,” Mason said. “Instead, try to identify the specific barriers that got in your way and think through strategies to avoid such challenges in the future.” For example, to avoid the temptation of buying a candy bar while standing in the checkout line at the grocery store, make sure to eat a healthy snack, such as a handful of nuts or a piece of string cheese, before going shopping.

6. Practice yoga. Two observational studies conducted by cancer prevention researcher Alan Kristal, Dr. P.H., a member of the Hutchinson Center’s Public Health Sciences Division, have found an association between regular yoga practice and weight maintenance and weight loss. One of his studies, published in 2005, found that regular yoga practice is associated with the prevention of middle-age spread in normal-weight people and the promotion of weight loss in those who are overweight. A follow-up study published in 2009 found that regular yoga practice is associated with mindful eating, and people who eat mindfully are less likely to be obese. “These findings fit with our hypothesis that yoga increases mindfulness in eating and leads to less weight gain over time, independent of the physical activity aspect of yoga practice,” Kristal said. “Mindful eating is a skill that augments the usual approaches to weight loss, such as dieting, counting calories and limiting portion sizes. Adding yoga practice to a standard weight-loss program may make it more effective."

At Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, our interdisciplinary teams of world-renowned scientists and humanitarians work together to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, HIV/AIDS and other diseases. Our researchers, including three Nobel laureates, bring a relentless pursuit and passion for health, knowledge and hope to their work and to the world. www.fhcrc.org

It’s about harmonizing calories in petite ways that add up to big benefits. You just need to do the magical trick that’s all.

Interpret the following instructions for Weight Loss:

Wake-up and workout your eyes when it’s open, then sit up slowly without using your hands. With the use of legs straight out, lean forward until you feel a gentle stretch in your back and hamstrings. Do you really need 8 glasses of water a day?

How much water do we really need? You may think six to eight glasses per day because you have probably read many articles and had discussions with your doctor to support that. But a Scottish physician has blasted that standard in a British Medical Journalarticle, stirring the debate about how much water we should drink and how much is too much and bad for our health. Dr. Margaret McCartney argues there is no quality scientific evidence to support the recommendation, which she says can lead to over-hydration problems for some people.

Here's what you need to know to sort hydration hype from good health advice.

Don't skimp
The eight-glass formula doesn't fit for everyone. It depends on your gender, size, and level of activity, other studies note. The Institute of Medicine calls for adult men to drink 13 cups of fluid daily (which totals three liters, or a little more than four tall reusable water bottles) and women to have nine cups (2.2 liters, or about the amount found in three reusable water bottles). That number changes according to lifestyle. The more active a person is, the more they will need to replace fluids. Larger people, pregnant and nursing women, and those who take dehydrating medications also will likely need to account for that by adding more water to their diet.

If you are active, it's also important to account for your environment when calculating how much fluid you need. If you are exercising in temperatures that are very hot (likely leading you sweat more) or very cold (which can stunt your ability to sense dehydration), are an endurance athlete, or are active in a high-altitude area, you will probably need to up your water intake.
Don't overdo it
The debate about how much water we really need to be drinking is centered around the risk of hyponatremia, or taking in more fluid that the body loses while sweating. It is a serious condition that occurs when there is not enough sodium (or salt) in the body fluids outside of the cells. This can cause swelling, including of the brain. Hyponatremia happens when a person sweats excessively in one stint, does not eat, does not urinate enough, and drinks a great deal of water. Symptoms include confusion, headaches, muscle spasms, vomiting, convulsions, and fatigue. In the worst cases, hyponatremia can lead to seizures, coma, and even death.

There are exceptions for medical conditions and other situations, but athletes are often watched for signs of hyponatremia, especially those participating in endurance events like a marathon or triathlon.

Experts advise taking in some electrolyte-replacement fluids in addition to drinking water while you are exercising. However, you really only need a minimal amount to keep your body in balance and give you an energy kick. For example, it is recommended that runners out for 30 minutes to an hour take in three to six ounces of fluid every 15 or 20 minutes, including one sports drink. There's also evidence that simply taking sips or swishing a sports drink will do the trick.

Don't get sucked in to the sports drink hype
The risks of hyponatremia are steep, but take the hype about over-hydrating with a grain of salt. The multi-billion-dollar sports drink industry has pushed the idea that most people need more than water when they are active. However, some experts say that most people don't need a lot of sports beverages, and that they often just add calories to diets. The CDC recommends choosing sports drinks that do not have added sugar, which can total 38 grams in just one bottle.
Count other drinks besides water as fluids
It's OK to include other drinks when you're measuring how many fluids you take in per day. However, that isn't a license to subsist on soda, coffee, and sugary drinks. Although caffeine in soda and coffee won't dehydrate you, they shouldn't be used to quench thirst or as a substitute for water. Add them to your fluid tally, but do reach for water more often than you pop open a can of bubbly stuff.

People who imbibe, particularly wine and hard liquors, should also be aware that those drinks with a high alcohol content can be dehydrating. Beer, however, is less dehydrating because it is predominantly water. Drinking a glass of water before and after alcohol can't hurt fluid intake or the chances of avoiding a headache the next day.

Eat your water
You don't always have to sip to stay hydrated. Experts say that 20 percent (or 2-1/2 cups) of the water we ingest comes from the foods we eat. Choosing the right water-rich fruits and vegetables will also add nutrients to your diet, fill you up, and may even give some oomph to your exercise.

Fruits like strawberries, cantaloupes, and peaches are packed full of water and potassium, which is the electrolyte shed when your body sweats. Adding more to your daily diet will help balance the fluids your body needs, regulate your heartbeat and circulation, and tastes better than chugging an energy drink.

Selecting foods that fuel your health while helping keep you hydrated will give you more bang for your buck. Watermelon offers a vitamin C boost, broccoli helps fight cancer, pineapple aids muscle recovery after a big workout, and yogurt ups immunity. Sneak in the good stuff
If you're up to your ears in cucumber salad or can't manage to down another bottle of water, work in little ways to stay hydrated. Add slices of orange, lime, kiwi, or watermelon to a jug of water for a burst of natural flavor. Make a regular old glass of tap water feel fancier by adding fizz with a counter-top carbonator (sold for about $100 and marketed as home soda-makers, skip the added flavors to make sparkling water in your own reusable bottles). Take 10 minutes once a week to stock your fridge, car, gym bag, and desk with water bottles so it's convenient to grab water wherever you spend most of your day. Finally, you can up your fluid intake with one little step by simply adding a straw to your glass of water.

DISEASES OF THE GUMS

DISEASES OF THE GUMS
Gums are made of soft tissue. They surround the bottom portion of your teeth (called the tooth root). Taking care of your gums is just as important as taking care of your teeth. The most common gum complaints are redness, swelling, tenderness and bleeding of the gums, which is a sign of inflamed gums or "gingivitis". This is caused due to the build up of plaque, a bacteria filled concoction of food and saliva, around the base of the teeth or in between the teeth and the gums. Thus brushing the teeth after every meal and flossing them at least twice daily helps to prevent the collection of plaque.

Women are more susceptible to gingivitis than men. Their gums bleed easily especially during their menstrual periods or during their pregnancy. Gingivitis is also common in people wearing dentures that don"t fit them properly or in those suffering from diabetes, chronic smokers, leukemia, etc. or  in those going through a lot of stress. Heredity, certain drugs (especially antidepressants, oral contraceptives, antihistamines, decongestants, nasal sprays and certain medications for hearttroubles) and vitamin deficiencies are some of the other common causes.

"Scurvy" is a condition where the gums become red, hot, swollen, spongy, very sensitive and they separate from the teeth and there can be formation of small ulcers on the gums, inside of lips and cheeks, palate and on the tongue with an offensive odor from the mouth. This condition usually results due to dietary deficiencies, especially that of Vitamin C or can be due to heredity, certain drugs or stress.

Use a soft bristled brush for sore and inflamed gums. Proxabrush is a special inter proximal brush that has tiny bristles that go below the gum line, where floss cannot reach. They are thus useful when used in conjunction with normal brushing and flossing.

SOME HOME REMEDIES

1. Incorporate a lot of fresh, raw or lightly cooked vegetables (especially broccoli, pecacua, cauliflower and tomatoes) and fresh, raw fruits (especially citrus fruits, which are a rich source of vitamin C) in your diet. The person should take a well balanced diet consisting of seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables and fruits.

2. Mixture of carrot and beetroot juice is a useful remedy for gum disorders.

3. Chew one unripe guava daily to stop the bleeding from the gums because of its richness in vitamin C.

4. Eating oranges and rubbing the gums with their skins daily can help cure pyorrhea (inflammation of the gums).

5. Oranges, pomegranates (anar) and bananas are useful for bleeding gums.

6. Oil from leaves of cinnamon tree (dalchini) is expressed and applied to the gums to make them firm and strong.

7. Dry Indian gooseberry (amla) should be  powdered with an equal quantity of sugar and this powder should be given in doses of one teaspoonful, three times daily, with milk.

8. Wash and cut six lemons in small pieces and pour in some water and bring it to a boil. Then let it cool for about half an hour and then strain it and hold some of this juice in your mouth for a few minutes and take a few glasses of it daily for a few days.

9. The juice of raw spinach (palak) is another useful remedy for bleeding gums and for the treatment of pyorrhea.

10. Grind a few cloves (lavang) to a paste and mix it with lemon juice and massage this paste over the gums.

11. Onions eaten raw keeps the gums healthy and strong.

12. Washing the gums daily with salt solution helps.

13. Lettuce leaves should be chewed daily immediately after meals.

14. One to two cloves of garlic should be chewed daily to keep them strong and prevent any bleeding gums.

15. Chewing cardamom (elaichi) seeds is useful to prevent gum decay.

16. Potato should be included in your daily diet, since it is a good source of Vitamin C.

17. Moisten a small piece of cotton with sandalwood oil and apply it locally over the bleeding gums.

18. Betel nut is chewed to check bleeding from gums.

Health tips: Quality magnifiers can help sharpen low vision

When a patient is diagnosed with low vision, this means vision impairment that is not correctable by standard glasses, contact lenses, medicine or surgery. This vision loss can affect an individual’s independence and quality of life, but it doesn’t have to.

There are many tools available for these individuals to remain independent and continue to do things they enjoy — like reading, writing, crocheting, etc. Many people with low vision don’t know about the resources that are available to them.

Low vision aids keep getting better each year with newer technology. Quality low vision aids can only be purchased through low vision specialists and dealers. Magnifiers purchased from the local drugstore are meant for people with healthy eyes and good vision; these magnifiers only have a minimal amount of the power that low vision magnifiers provide.

A hand-held low vision magnifier comes with or without lights, with or without a base and in many different powers. Hand-held electronics that can be easily taken in a pocket or purse are great for viewing prices, reading a menu, writing checks and viewing books. These handy magnifiers have different contrast adjustments and a variety of powers.

Another option is a CCTV, which is a device for writing and reading that allows a much larger field of view than hand-held devices.

Lighting is another important factor in dealing with low vision. A good light directed onto what you are reading can improve what you are able to see.

If you have been diagnosed with low vision and are wondering which piece of equipment would be best for you, an evaluation with a low vision specialist is the right place to start. Always continue to have routine eye exams and monitor Amsler grids as instructed by your doctor. Call your eye care provider if you notice any changes in your vision.
